Delaware State Police Investigate Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – Delaware State Police

Date posted: Friday, June 24, 2022

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Wilmington area Friday morning.

On June 24, 2022 at approximately 12:16 p.m., a silver 2008 Lincoln MKZ was traveling northbound on Interstate 495 as it approached the Exit 1 area for US Business Route 13. For some unknown reason, the driver of the Lincoln shot the right shoulder and stopped. The operator then exited his vehicle and began to stand on I-495. Meanwhile, a blue 2017 Honda Accord was traveling north on I-495 approaching the Lincoln location. The Accord partially crossed the white shoulder line and as a result, its right front corner struck the left rear corner of the stopped Lincoln MKZ. After the collision, the Lincoln spun clockwise until it hit a guardrail on the east side of the roadway where it came to rest. The Honda then flipped onto its roof and slid north until it came to a stop on the freeway. The driver of the Lincoln was also struck at this time by one of the vehicles while standing on the highway.

The operator of the Lincoln MKZ, a 53-year-old man from Newark, DE, suffered serious injuries. He was taken to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Victim identification is pending notification of next of kin. The Lincoln’s passenger, a 53-year-old man from New Castle, DE, was properly restrained. He was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. The operator of the Honda Accord, a 23-year-old female from New Castle, DE, was not properly restrained. She was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

No other injuries were reported. Northbound I-495 was closed for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
