Newark- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision last Friday on Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7).

On Friday October 15, 2021, at approximately 3:43 p.m., a 1977 MG MGB was traveling northbound on Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7) from the Old Stanton Christiana Road intersection in the right lane. The vehicle began to slow down and came to a stop due to traffic in front of it. At the same time, a 2020 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling north in the right lane directly behind the MGB, did not stop for traffic ahead and struck the rear of the MGB. After the impact, the BTP crossed the tracks northbound and came to a stop in the right lane of Route 7 southbound. The GMC continued in a northwesterly direction through the northbound lanes and into the center median where it struck the collision attenuator located in the median. This second collision redirected the GMC into the northbound lanes where it rolled over onto its roof and came to a stop.

The 51-year-old MGB operator identified as John Porter of Wilmington was rushed to Christiana hospital with life-threatening injuries. In hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The 28-year-old GMC operator freed himself from the overturned vehicle and fled on foot. He was then apprehended by soldiers about 800 meters from the scene of the collision. Once he was taken into custody, this prompted Troopers to open a drinking and driving investigation. The results of the DUI investigation are pending.

Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7) was closed for approximately 3 hours during the accident investigation and the roadway was cleared.
