Charlotte, North Carolina (Friday, November 19, 2021) – Detectives from the Major Accident Investigation Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision in the 700 block of Atando Avenue.
On Friday, November 19, 2021, at approximately 8:37 a.m., agents from the North Tryon Division intervened in the parking lot at 701 Atando Avenue in reference to a single motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located an 18-wheeled truck and trailer with its operator, Silvio Ocampo, and the victim, identified as Jose Danilo Guerra-Mejia, date of birth: 08/12/1975. Medic arrived at the scene and transported Guerra-Mejia to Atrium Main Health Center with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after his arrival, Guerra-Mejia was declared deceased from injuries sustained in this incident. His family have been notified of his death.
The CMPD Major Accident Unit, the North Carolina Department of Labor and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol – Commercial Motor Carriers Unit have been contacted to investigate. The preliminary investigation shows that Ocampo arrived at 701 Atando Avenue to deliver a trailer. After loosening the trailer, Ocampo moved the tractor to the opposite side of the business in order to attach another trailer for delivery. Once Ocampo got to the second trailer, he started backing the tractor up to the trailer and collided with Guerra-Mejia, who was removing a safety device under the trailer. It is believed that Ocampo was unaware that Guerra-Mejia was in the area or under the trailer. Speed and impairment were not contributing factors in this accident. Currently, there are no pending charges; however, this investigation remains active.
