Rafiabad, October 25: The Senior Vice President of the Conference of Peoples (PC) and former Minister Abdul Gani Vakil on Monday expressed deep concern over damage to apple orchards and other crops due to untimely snowfall and heavy rains Saturday in the valley, especially in the areas of Rafiabad and Shopian.

In a statement, Vakil demanded a comprehensive economic program and compensation for orchards and farmers who suffered heavy losses due to untimely weather conditions. Vakil also visited many areas of Rafiabad including Behrampora, Chatloora, Reban, Nowpora Kalan, Hadipora and Chijama.

Vakil also demanded that the Crop Insurance Program (CIS) be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir so that the program saves fruit growers and farmers in the event of losses suffered due to natural disasters.

The CP chief alleged that whenever natural disasters cause damage to fruits and crops, those most affected are guaranteed compensation and even investigations are carried out but no relief reaches them.

The former minister urged the UT government to make an immediate assessment of the damage to fruit growers and to provide financial assistance to affected families without delay, as fruit growers have already suffered a lot in the past in due to Covid 19 and climatic hazards.

The waiver of the KCC loan is the need of the hour at this crucial time which can be of great help in reviving the crumbling fruit industry and strengthening the fruit producer, Vakil added.
